NEWIGER SILVER AT WORLD BJJ EXPO

Brampton – Saturday (June 3) saw the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Expo being hosted in Canada at the CAA Centre Brampton, home of the Brampton Honey Badgers. Kilian Academy’s Jonathan Newiger represented Grey-Bruce County and competed at this year's Expo. The three-day Expo drew athletes from across North America and saw Youtube celebrities like Jordan Presinger and Master Ken also make their appearances.

The thirty-eight-year-old military veteran from Owen Sound, Jonathan Newiger competed and secured the silver medal in the Master 2 Medium-Heavy (-205lbs) division. “The gold medal has eluded me so far this year, however, it has only fueled my hunger to secure it at the AJP Nationals.” Still struggling with a minor elbow injury sustained earlier this year, Jonathan will be preparing for the 2023 AJP Canada Nationals which is hosted in August. Abrie Kilian, Program Director at Kilian Academy stated that he is satisfied with Newiger’s preparation so far, with a few minor adjustments needed to his game plan.

Having toured Afghanistan as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Jonathan stated that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu keeps him aligned and contributes positively towards his mental well-being. “The Academy has become a sanctuary for everyday people, with the strange ability to mould them into champions. I am grateful to be part of the Academy and to represent Grey-Bruce Community”, stated Newiger.
